Blepharoplasty
(Eyelid Surgery)
The skin and connective tissue in the eyelid area is very thin and sensitive. This is why sagging and wrinkling can occur at an early stage, particularly in this area. Sagging of the upper eyelid skin can cause difficulties of vision. Sagging of the lower eyelid skin gives this area a tired appearance. Eyelid surgery usually leads to very good results here.
Procedure
Blepharoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Very extensive procedures also can be performed under sedation (sleep combined with local anesthesia) or under general anesthesia. You can be discharged after a few hours.
Upper blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin tissue, which in extreme cases can extend over the edge of the upper eyelid as an overhanging fold. The reduction of fatty tissue and correction of the eyelid muscle in the upper eyelid is determined on an individual basis.
Lower blepharoplasty
is usually performed through the lower eyelid conjunctiva. This means that no scar is visible after the operation.
A special type of blepharoplasty is double eyelid surgery or Asian Blepharoplasty. Here we create an eyelid crease resulting in a larger and more symmetric, almond-shaped eye. This procedure is mainly used in patients from Asia.
