Botox and Hyaluronic Acid
in Aesthetics
Over the past decades, a large number of fillers have been launched on the market by commercial manufacturers. In the long term, only two procedures have been able to establish themselves as sensible treatment options: botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid.
Both are very often used in combination. For this reason, they are described together here.
Botulinum toxin (Botox® and others)
Botulinum toxin A is a protein produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. As one of the strongest known neurotoxins, it leads to temporary paralysis of the affected muscles. In very strong dilutions, it has been used in medicine since the early 1980s, initially in the treatment of excessively producing sweat glands (hyperhidrosis).
Botulinum toxin injections, administered in single doses to the affected muscle group, paralyse the muscles with a time delay of four to seven days. This muscle paralysis causes smoothing of the overlying skin and disappears after approximately three to six months.
How does a Botox treatment work?
During a Botox treatment, small amounts of the drug are injected directly into the affected facial muscles using a fine needle. This leads to a temporary relaxation and paralysis of the muscles and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Which areas can be treated?
Typical areas of application for Botox on the face are
-
Forehead
-
Frown lines
-
Crow's feet
-
Jaw line
-
Marionette lines
How long do the results last?
The effect of Botox is not permanent and usually lasts between three and six months. After this time, a top-up treatment may be necessary to maintain the results.
After repeated therapy, antibodies may form and insensitivity (resistance to therapy) may develop. You can also seek advice on this.
Hyaluronic acid
The products used are the latest generation of sterile gels made from non-animal hyaluronic acid, which are intended for injection into the skin to correct facial wrinkles, enhance lips and mould facial contours. These gels meet the latest quality and safety standards and represent a new reference class in aesthetics.
How does a hyaluronic acid treatment work?
During a hyaluronic acid treatment, a fine needle is used to inject the hyaluronic acid into the subcutaneous areas to be treated under constant control until the expected treatment goal is achieved.
Which areas can be treated?
Typical areas of application for hyaluronic acid in the face are
-
Eye region (‘crow's feet’)
-
Cheek region (emphasising the cheekbones)
-
Nose correction (fine surface and symmetry corrections)
-
Nasolabial fold (filling)
-
Upper lip (contouring, Russian lips)
-
Deep mouth wrinkles (marionette lines)
-
Chin augmentation (emphasising the chin)
How long do the results last?
The duration of effect of a treatment with hyaluronic acid depends on the area of the face treated and the skin type and is approx. 6 to 12 months (lips: approx. 6 months), although in individual cases it may be shorter or even longer. The desired result can be maintained through refresher and follow-up treatments.
